Blackhawks Split High-Scoring Series at Ellsworth
IOWA FALLS, Iowa — Southeastern Community College wrapped up a wild, offense-heavy series against Ellsworth Community College, earning two run-rule victories after dropping a slugfest in the opener.
The Blackhawks went 2-1 on the weekend, scoring 48 total runs across the three contests.
Game 1: Ellsworth 20, SCC 15
Southeastern found itself on the wrong end of a back-and-forth offensive battle in the series opener, falling 20-15 despite scoring in five different innings.
The turning point came in the fourth inning when Ellsworth exploded for 12 runs to take control of the game.
Offensively, Gavin Awbrey led the Blackhawks with a home run and four RBIs, while Tayvon Holomar added a homer and drove in two. Efrain Osorio collected two hits and two RBIs, and Nile Sinn chipped in two RBIs as well.
Southeastern showed resilience late, scoring 12 runs over the final four innings, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Game 2: SCC 13, Ellsworth 3 (5 innings)
The Blackhawks bounced back with a dominant run-rule victory, taking control early and never looking back.
Southeastern plated three runs in the first inning and continued to build the lead with a four-run fourth and five-run fifth to secure the 13-3 win in five innings.
Jackson Petsche led the offensive surge with two home runs and five RBIs, while James Nydegger doubled twice and drove in four runs. Gavin Awbrey added a home run and three RBIs, helping power the Blackhawks despite recording just seven hits as a team.
On the mound, Kyler Kaczmarski got the start for Southeastern, setting the tone as the Blackhawks controlled the game from the outset.
Game 3: SCC 20, Ellsworth 5
Southeastern closed the series in emphatic fashion, erupting for 20 runs on 17 hits.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the Blackhawks responded with a six-run third inning and never looked back, adding four runs in the fou13rth, five in the sixth, and four in the seventh.
James Nydegger continued his big weekend, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. Jackson Petsche reached base six times and added a home run, while Danny Rollins and Tayvon Holomar also went deep.
Jake Miller contributed three hits and three RBIs at the top of the lineup, helping fuel the offensive explosion.
On the mound, Isaac Flamino earned the win, striking out seven over four innings. Chris Iannuzzi, Luke Scherrman, and Grant Mather combined to allow just one run over the final three innings to seal the victory.
Southeastern's offense proved to be the difference throughout the series, showcasing both power and depth as the Blackhawks secured the series win.
The Blackhawks will return to action on Tuesday, March 24, traveling to face Illinois Central College at 3:00 p.m. Southeastern continues its busy week on Wednesday, March 25, hosting Northeast Iowa Community College at 4:00 p.m. before heading back on the road Thursday, March 26, to take on Carl Sandburg College at 3:00 p.m.
Conference play resumes over the weekend as the Blackhawks travel to face Iowa Central Community College for a three-game set, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m.
